Luton is a large town in the county of Bedfordshire and is located thirty miles to the north of London. Luton has a strong multicultural atmosphere and is home to large Indian, Pakistani and Jamaican populations. In addition to several large parks, the town also boasts its own football team and international airport.
The town is best known for London Luton Airport, which was established back in 1938. This international airport can be found a little under two miles to the east of the town centre and offers direct flights to a wide range of different destinations including Istanbul, Glasgow, Geneva, Gibraltar, Faro and Prague. The airport is served by airlines such as Ryanair, Thompson Airways and Monarch Airlines.
Luton is a university town and is served by the University of Luton. This large university has several campuses scattered throughout the town, with the main campus situated on George Street. The university once specialised in the humanities such as English Literature and the Performing Arts, although these days the focus has mainly changed to Computer Science and other Information Technology-related subjects. A large number of international students attend the University of Luton, which helps to add to the multi-cultural feel of the town.
Luton covers an area of just under seventeen square miles and boasts a population of more than 203,000 people. The town features three main train stations and passengers can take direct connections to destinations such as London, Brighton, Bedford and St Albans. A large percentage of the people who live in Luton commute to work in London on weekdays, while coaches also take passengers into London from the coach terminal that can be found close to the main train station.
Luton’s town centre is pedestrianised and is home to a large number of shops, bars and restaurants. The main shopping centre here is called the Arndale Centre and features dozens of chain stores as well as independent shops and an indoor market. A cinema complete can be found opposite the Arndale Centre as well as a collection of bars, restaurants and other entertainment options.
Luton features an ever growing collection of bars, clubs and pubs that cater to the large student population as well as other demographics. Most of these venues offer student discounts as well as other incentives to keep up with the growing competition and the biggest bars usually attract large crowds on weekends.
