Kendal is an historic market town in the beautiful county of Cumbria. It stands on the River Kent and is an excellent starting point to explore The Lake District. It is known today for tourism, including hiking, biking and climbing and is the home of Kendal Mint Cake.
Kendal has many interesting places to visit, museums and art galleries being high on the list. The Brewery Art Gallery has a theatre and three cinemas as well as dark room facilities and two visual art galleries. It also has dance and drama studios and is well worth a visit. Kendal Castle is a good place for a picnic on a sunny day and the Leisure Centre provides a swimming pool, gym and sports hall if the weather is not so good. The Kendal Mountain Festival or Kendal Mountain Film Festival as it is also known is an important event in the UK calendar for outdoor enthusiasts. These are just a few of the many things to see or do in Kendal.
The historic market still runs today and should not be missed. The narrow streets, passageways and alleys which are picturesque and atmospheric give an insight into how Kendal looked in the past. Today Kendal has many high street stores as well as good quality independent traders and there is also an Outlet Centre. You can leisurely peruse the lovely craft and antique shops. The historic 1657 Chocolate House was built around 1630 as a family home, it has traded as many businesses over the years but has been The Chocolate House for over 30 years and provides many chocolate delights. There are also charming cafes and good restaurants to enjoy.
Kendal is well positioned for visiting the Lakes such as Conniston Water and Grassmere and is just eight miles from Lake Windemere. It is a good base to do sightseeing tours or enjoy the hill walking or biking. The Lakeland Climbing Centre maybe what you are looking for and all the family will enjoy a visit to the Lakeland Maize Maze Farm. It has a variety of activities for children and everyone enjoys a maze. Be sure to ring to check if the maze is available as it is only open in certain months, though all other activities will be available.
