Situated in County Durham in the North East of England, Hartlepool was established in the 7th Century. As a result of Hartlepool Abbey already existing, a village was created nearby.
19th Century Expansion
Hartlepool then grew throughout the Middle Ages, helped by the development of a harbour. While, as the Industrial Revolution impacted on Britain, Hartlepool saw a railway link put in place, which connected the then town to the coal mining area of South Durham.
In the first half of the 19th Century, the expansion of Hartlepool was aided by another port being added, and then another railway link, which linked Hartlepool to the south. The new town of West Hartlepool was also created due to this expansion.
The Infamous German Navy Attack On Hartlepool
The shipbuilding industry became so significant in Hartlepool that the town was targeted by the German Navy at the start of World War I. On December 16th, 1914, 117 people were killed in the first waves of attacks on mainland Britain of the First World War. After the Second World War there was a decline in the industries associated with the town, but the area was revived in the 1990s thanks to the docks being transformed into a marina.
The Monkey Association
One of the most famous legends in Hartlepool’s history was the trial and execution of a monkey during the Napoleonic Wars. Believed to be a French spy the unfortunate animal ended up being hung. This fanciful story, though unlikely to be true, has endured and Hartlepool has embraced the monkey link to such an extent that the local football team, Hartlepool United, have H’Angus the monkey as their mascot. More bizarrely, the mascot was elected mayor of Hartlepool in 2002, when his main agenda was offering bananas for free to schoolchildren!
Tall Ships’ Race
Hartlepool hosted the final stage of the 2010 Tall Ships’ Race, which is a European sailing event whereby crews are mainly made up of young people. Some 125 tall ships competed when the event was held in Hartlepool.
