What should I know about the city Dundee?
The city of Dundee, situated on the banks of the Firth of Tay on the east coast of Scotland, is the country’s fourth largest city with a population of almost 150,000 inhabitants. Once famous as a jute manufacturing centre, the city is now a modern, thriving centre of commerce, educational facilities and biotechnology centres.
Climate
The climate of Dundee is typical of the cold east coast of Scotland with temperatures rarely exceeding 66° Fahrenheit in summer and winter temperatures often dropping below freezing. The average rainfall ranges from a minimum of 44mm in April to a maximum of 72mm in January.
Sport in Dundee
Dundonians, as residents of Dundee are known, have a passion for sport and the city is home to two famous football teams, Dundee F.C. and Dundee United, both of which are in the Scottish Premiership. Other popular sports include ice hockey, rugby and cycling.
Culture
There are several cultural centres in Dundee. The most well known is Caird Hall, a large music auditorium that has played host to a widely diverse range of music concerts and gigs ranging from the Scottish National Orchestra to Led Zeppelin. The venue continues to present famous orchestras and bands. There are also several notable museums and art galleries in the city. The McManus Galleries is home to a large collection of art and artefacts connected with the history of the city, while the University of Dundee also manages several museums including science and medical museums in the city.
Dundee Nightlife
Dundee has a good range of bars, night clubs, cocktail and cafe bars throughout the city. Many are new and established in the wake of a one-billion pound waterfront development. Popular places include The Phoenix, Jute Bar and the Art Bar, which is especially popular with students from the nearby College of Art and Design. For live music pubs, many people head for Busker’s and Fat Sam’s. Both are well known for introducing new and up-and-coming bands and music artists.
Access to Dundee
Dundee is well served by local and long-distance bus networks. Rail services are more limited but there are regular services to Edinburgh and Glasgow. Dundee Airport is small and operates services to Stanstead Airport near London.
While Dundee is one of the UK’s smallest cities, it has a distinctive character and long history that makes it a popular destination for visitors to Scotland.
