Chester – An Unforgettable Visit
In 79 AD, Romans settled and founded a fort or “castrum”, which they named ‘Deva Victrix’. Deva, taken allegedly from the name of the river Dee, was originally a military base that gradually became a civilian settlement. About five hundred years later, The Romans retreated from Britain and were substituted by Anglo-Saxons, who renamed the place as Legeceaster. Time went by and the thriving town became known as Chester.
Chester boasts a number of interesting landmarks for those who live in it as well as for those who come to visit. Horserace lovers will know, for instance, that here you can find the oldest sporting venue – the first hordes race took place in 1539 at the Roodee. And it is still open.
If you go for a stroll in the town centre, you will be welcomed by two important places: Chester Cathedral and Chester’s Rows. The Cathedral is England’s North West’s most popular tourist attraction. It took about 250 years to build and it has been listed as a Grade I monument.
Chester’s Rows are a unique feature of the city – you will not find anything like them anywhere else in the world. The Rows are two-tiered medieval galleries that now home some of the best shops of the city. Their black and white half-timbered buildings have existed since the late 13th century and their origins are not entirely known.
The walls of Chester, another historic landmark, are the best preserved in the county as they form the most complete circuit around any town or city in England. The City Wall is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, which means that they cannot be modified or changed without legal government authorisation.
A town full of history, Chester also boasts fantastic modern life. Tourists can visit Chester Zoo, which looks after over 12,000 animals in an area of 110 acres. Half of the species found here are on the brink of extinction and it gives visitors a rare opportunity to see animals that could not be seen anywhere else in such a safe and protected way.
Regarded as one of the most beautiful towns in England, Chester offers a great night life, a fine dining experience and even ancient laws: It is illegal for Welshmen to enter the town after nightfall. A law that goes ignored by the welcoming people from Chester.
