The beautiful city of Aberdeen stands in a scenic landscape, surrounded by hills, rivers, fishing villages and castles. It stands out from the surrounding scenery with its sparkling granite buildings. Although the centre of the city is modern and up to date the neighbouring area includes fine examples of medieval architecture and cobbled streets. It holds a key position in the international oil trade, and as such has a wealth of places to stay, fantastic restaurants and plenty of things to do.
When is the Best Time to Go?
Known as the Granite City, in spring and summer it takes on the mantle of the Silver City, due to the locally quarried granite that was used for construction during the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries. When the sun shines the stones high mica content makes the buildings shimmer like silver. Aberdeen has something for everyone all year round, but the long days of summer will give you more time to explore.
How to Get There
Aberdeen has excellent links with many European cities via the International Airport, but can also be reached easily by rail or by bus.
Travelling Around the City
There is an excellent bus service, and a unlimited day pass is very reasonably priced. There are also numerous taxis services, giving you the opportunity to talk to one of the locals. For evening and weekend bookings it’s best to book out in advance. If you’re planning to look round the city centre most spots can be reached by foot.
Old Aberdeen
This is where you can find the city’s best architecture and includes the cobbled main street of the university. There are plenty of well-preserved medieval buildings to explore. The university library is a pretty impressive modern building, and has been given the accolade of one of the 18 most beautiful libraries in the world. Just to the north of the university is Aberdeen’s take on Hobbiton – Brig o’ Balgownie.
Unusual Attractions
Footdee – an untouched fishing village that lies near the city centre.
Zoological Museum – gaze in wonder at the collection of animal specimens preserved in fluid filled test tubes.
There are many other attractions including water sports and climbing activities, a snow sports centre, museums, golf courses, galleries, parks, gardens and open spaces. Whatever you’re looking for or interested in, Aberdeen will have something that fits the bill perfectly.
